If Social Media decided the Oscars (Best Picture – Part 1)

Here at Gruvi we are having some fun with a little experiment – we are trying to see if social media marketing analysis can predict the outcome of the Oscars (Check out our previous attempt here). In preparation for the nominations later in the year we are looking at the early contenders in two categories: Best Foreign Film and today, Best Picture.

 Shape Of Water

Synopsis: An otherworldly fairy tale, set against the backdrop of Cold War era America circa 1962. In the hidden high-security government laboratory where she works, lonely Elisa is trapped in a life of isolation. Elisa’s life is changed forever when she and co-worker Zelda discover a secret classified experiment.

Social Media Marketing of Note: With a Golden Lion win from Venice under its belt, the current marketing has been the largely 5 star reviews and a trailer release. With an end of year premiere, we expect the big push to come around then. But until then, enjoy this beautiful hand drawn poster.

Call Me By Your Name

Synopsis: In 1983, the son of an American professor is enamoured by the graduate student who comes to study and live with his family in their northern Italian home. Together, they share an unforgettable summer full of music, food, and romance that will forever change them.

Social Media Marketing of Note: Trailers have been released, but being one of the smaller movies we think they will keep their marketing spend for later in the year to tie in with Oscar nominations.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

Synopsis: In this darkly comic drama, a mother personally challenges the local authorities to solve her daughter’s murder, when they fail to catch the culprit.

Social Media Marketing of Note: Similar to Martin McDonagh’s other movies (In Bruges, Seven Psychopaths), Three Billboards has been released as quite a low key affair. Fox Searchlight has a website with cast & crew as well as a simple Facebook page and a trailer release. Going on the rave reviews for the movie and its strong US box office performance, we think they are keeping their powder dry for a big Oscars push at the end of the year.

Dunkirk

Synopsis: Allied soldiers from Belgium, the British Empire and France are surrounded by the German Army, and evacuated during a fierce battle in World War II.

Social Media Marketing of Note: With even a customised skin on its IMDB page, Dunkirk had a huge marketing push for its release along with normal trailers, Facebook page etc. The remnants and rave reviews should keep it as a contender come nominations.
